The former Oxford United goalkeeper, now aged thirty-three, was sensationally dropped for Tuesday's game at home to Burnley.

New signing Marcus Hahnemann, recently signed from Fulham on a free transfer, has impressed since arriving at the club - earning the right to the number one shirt.

According to manager Pardew, Phil could soon be leaving the club.

"Phil has been a great servant to the club. He's had two-and-a-half years as this club's first-team keeper but he is upset about being left out," said Pardew.

"I expected that, but unfortunately he has made it clear he wants to get away. I didn't expect that kind of reaction but that's what he wants."

"There has been no formal transfer request."
