Royals Bring Keeper In On Trial

Steve Coppell has fired under-fire goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann a warning shot by bringing in 28-year-old shotstopper Kelvin Jack on trial.

The Reading boss is looking to bring in a 'keeper who can challenge calamity Hahnemann for the number one shirt. Coppell believes that Jack, who originally had a trial spell at the club under ex-boss Alan Pardew in September 2001, could be the man to push Marcus for a first team spot.

The huge 6ft 4inch goalie has previously had trial spells at Walsall, Crystal Palace and Gillingham as he attempts to earn a deal with an English club.

Pardew was believed to be keen on signing the Trinidadian two years ago, but he never completed a deal. But now Coppell could push through the deal following Hahnemann's latest goalkeeping gaffes last week at Preston.

Ex-Reading boss Ian Porterfield once dropped Jack from the Trinidad & Tobago national side because he had a 'very bad attitude'. If the Royals choose to offer him a permanent deal then fireworks could await....

Meanwhile, Director of Football Nicky Hammond has denied that the club made a bid for Crewe Alexandra forward Steve Jones. The 27-year-old, who scored against Reading last October as the Royals slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Gresty Road, is in demand.

Derby and Preston are also reported to be interested in the frontman who has scored fourteen times this season.
