Goater: Set for a move to Reading
Alan Pardew believes striker Shaun Goater's experience could be a major asset to the Royals squad.

The Reading manager, who is currently with his team on a pre-season tour of Sweden, is aiming to take his side into the Premiership and feels that players of Goater's class can do just that.

Speaking to readingfc.co.uk, the Royals boss said: "We have a very young side who almost made the Premiership last year, and Shaun Goater is the kind of player who can take us that one step further.

"He is very much the type of player that i like - honest, a good pro, and obviously his record speaks for itself."

Madejski Stadium chiefs yesterday had an offer for the Bermudan's services accepted by Man City, who now strut their stuff at the City of Manchester Stadium.

The bid was made following the collapse of a similar move for Wimbledon striker David Connolly.

The fee, believed to be £500,000, could prove to be a bargain if Goater can take Reading into the Premiership. However, the 33-year-old has yet to agree personal terms with the Royals.

Royals fans were delighted that the club have had a bid for the Bermudan accepted, however, the Reading boss issued a note of caution.

If Goater wants a massive pay packet, to match his reputation, the deal could go the way of the proposed David Connolly transfer.

"We haven't even spoken to the player in terms of his personal requirements, so any deal is some way from being completed," added Pardew.

Meanwhile, the Royals last night beat Swedish side Gefle IF by three goals to one in their second pre-season friendly. Nathan Tyson netted twice whilst Darius Henderson also got his name on the scoresheet.

Reading lined up in an experimental 3-5-2 formation, a system they may use when the new season gets underway on August 9th.
