The 30-year-old centre-back, who had been courted by Alan Pardew for a long time prior to his transfer last week, can't wait to get started and is hoping to get his chance to impress in the first team as soon as possible.

Brown told readingfc.co.uk: "We've got plenty of games over Christmas and the boys that played Saturday (against Sheff Utd) are going to stay in the side. I'll sit in the wings so if and when I get my foot in the door I'll hope to take my chance."

The Brighton-born man has endured an awful past twelve months, barely featuring in the Addicks first-team. Brown revealed that he had wanted to make the switch to Reading in the summer but boss Alan Curbishley had blocked the deal because of an injury crisis at the Valley.

"I tried to come here in the summer but Alan Curbishley wouldn't let me go that early. It's great to finally be here now," he added.

"Mark Fish had an injury in the summer and Curbs said Reading was a no-go until he was fit. Then just as he was approaching full fitness Gary Rowett was injured so they overlapped and this is the first-time that Charlton have had a fully fit squad.

"Leaving the Valley was a wrench but if your not involved you want to be in the first team. Basically on the playing side I'd come to the end and it's nice to get away and hopefully get involved in someone's first team."

Question marks have been raised as to whether the new recruit will be able to slip into the first team after such a long-spell without regular action. However, the veteran believes he will be all guns blazing within three matches.

"I've been training every day, I've just been unfortunate not to be picked and I haven't had any injuries. I've played reserve team games so the only thing missing is competitive first team matches. It shouldn't take long for me to get up to full speed, two or three games at the most. I'll be ready for Saturday if necessary."

The 30-year-old went onto admit that he has been impressed by what he has seen of the set-up at Reading so far.

"I've been here before, this is a magnificent stadium. At Charlton it's been built up year by year but here it's been purpose built for football and it's a fantastic setup and it's a testament to the chairman."
