Madejski, who funded the signing of Kevin Watson late last season despite insisting that there was no money to spend, was in defiant mood insisting that boss Alan Pardew will have to sell before he can buy.

He told readingfc.co.uk "The manager (Alan Pardew) knows that if he wants to strenghten the squad at the moment then he's got to sell to buy."

But despite the financial problems that the club share with the 72 other Football League clubs Madejski underlined his determintation to one day see the Royals playing Premiership football.

The chairman insisted "We as a club have total ambition!". Before going on to say that he is "determined to make Reading Football Club one of the Premiership clubs."

According to Royals fans "There is Only One John Madejski", the man himself insisted "Whatever happens in football there will be a place for Reading Football Club because we (Reading) have the infastructure, arguably one of the finest stadiums in the country, a great academy, and we are investing huge sums of money to keep the academy going so our determination to be one of the best is there. We will be one of the leading clubs in the country!"

Meanwhile, Royals scout Brian McDermott revealed that the club were offered the chance to take Brazilian World Cup star Ricardinho on loan but unfortunately the club were unable to afford to bring in the World Cup star to boost our promotion chances as they couldn't afford it.
