Wigan Remain Top Despite Draw

Last updated : 28 August 2004 By Rob Cooper
Reading's defeat at the New Den this afternoon saw them sink to eighth in the league, whilst opponents Millwall rose above the Royals into fifth.

Despite a largely impressive start to the season, Reading have now lost two of their opening five games and will feel that they should have had points from all five of them.

However, with leaders Wigan only two points better off, and forty games still to play, there is plenty of time for Steve Coppell's team to catch up.

The Latics top the table with eleven points, but Stoke find themselves behind Paul Jewell's team only on goal difference. A Gifton Noel-Williams goal this afternoon gave Stoke a 1-0 win over Cardiff, who were without West Brom-bound Robert Earnshaw.

Meanwhile, Wolves remain without a Championship win after a 1-1 draw with local rivals Leicester. However, Kenny Miller's second half strike ensured that the Molineux side did at least record another point.

However both Leicester and Wolves, who have both been highly-tipped to win back Premiership football at the first attempt, find themselves deep in the bottom half of the table.

Elsewhere, Coventry surprisingly triumphed 4-1 at Nottingham Forest and West Ham beat Burnley 1-0 at home. Plymouth, who were unbeaten before today and sitting second, lost 3-1 at Watford and have slipped down the table.
