Whitehead Looks Set For Departure

Thirty-three-year-old shotstopper Phil Whitehead could end months of speculation by joining QPR later this week.

The out-of-favour 'keeper will play in a trial game for QPR against Plymouth this afternoon before Rangers boss Ian Holloway makes a decision on whether he wants to keep the Reading man.

Holloway has made the move for Whitehead as the R's regular reserve team 'keeper Nick Culkin is currently out of action due to injury.

'Big Phil', who has not featured in the first team since August, has been relegated to Reading's fourth choice goalkeeper after an angry row with manager Alan Pardew.

After bravely keeping his goal unpenetrated for much of last season as the Royals pushed for promotion the former Halifax goalkeeper lost his place in the side to new signing Marcus Hahnemann last summer. Upset on losing 'his' first team spot Whitehead has sulked in the reserves ever since.

A loan spell with Division Two outfit Tranmere Rovers earlier in the season failed to reap any rewards as the Prenton Park side went on a dreadful run, conceding scores of goals.

Injury has also not helped Phil's bid to get away from the club but a successful trial at QPR could see him join the London club as Chris Day's understudy.
