Thirteen-Goal Show Upstages Off-Pitch Party

Reading's match last night may have kicked off forty-five minutes late, but the off-field fun laid on by the hosts IFK Bergvik provided ample entertainment whilst fans waited for kick off.

The lowly Swedish Fourth Division side put on a fantastic funfair for the visit of Reading with bouncy castles and merry-go-rounds.

With Steve Coppell's side caught in traffic on the way to the ground there was plenty of time for fans to indulge in that extra pre-match candy floss.

Whilst the home side provided the off-field flair and splendour, Reading imposed their own dazzle on the game with a thumping 13 goals and a clean sheet.

Bergvik may not have been the mightiest of opponents, but nevertheless five goals for Nicky Forster and a further four for substitute Dave Kitson is an impressive haul by anyone's standards.

One can question the value of playing a game against such poor opponents, but given that the Royals have been back in pre-season training for less than three weeks it is not yet time to face Manchester United.

The club's clash with Brentford this Sunday should prove a better test of the team's credentials.

The lack of 'real' opposition certainly does not mean we should completely discount last night's game.

Forster hit his five goals despite being a doubt for the game with a minor groin injury whilst Kitson scored his four in just forty minutes.

Boss Steve Coppell was certainly pleased to see his side hit thirteen past Bergvik in the torrential Scandanavian rain.

"When you win 13-0 people might question the value of the game but from my point of view it was a terrific exercise," he said, speaking to the official site.

"When you go a couple up it can be easy to showboat but the fans who were there saw us be professional, we always wanted to go forward and create more."

Perhaps more pleasing was the squad coming through the game relatively unscathed. Only Lloyd Owusu and Dave Kitson have minor injury concerns, and both should be fit to play in the next game on Wednesday.

"They are just little knocks and niggles. We've been training hard and it was almost too good to be true that no-one had gone down," remarked Coppell.

Despite hitting thirteen past the lowly Swedish side, the Royals could have had even more, both Nicky Forster and Dean Morgan missed penalties, whilst Reading players clattered the woodwork on three occasions.

No doubt Brighton will pose a greater threat on August 7th, but with similar attacking potency the Royals should be able to bag their first three points of the campaign.
