Stan Ternent was disappointed to see his side play so badly against Reading on Saturday afternoon. The Clarets scored twice and missed a penalty but that was just half the story, at the other end they conceded five times.

The Royals, not known for their attacking prowess, made a mockery of Stan Ternent's side's defence, leading the Clarets boss to suggest after the game that his side could have played "a hundred times better. But then again Alan Pardew's side could, and often have, played a hundred times worse.

Speaking after the game Ternent said: "To be honest I'm a little bit lost for words, because we have been a hundred times better than that recently.

"Too many of our player's didn't perform to their capabilities today and I don't know the reason, because their preparation has been good."

The crushing result completed the double for Reading over Burnley, last time the sides met back in August the Royals triumphed 3-0 against a very poor Burnley side thanks to a brace from Cureton and a striker from Martin Butler.

After such an awful defeat an inquest, which has already begun, must be held.

Ternent added: "The first goal was important and Paul Cook said the ball didn't go out of play, but the linesman gave it. It's no excuse for our defending in the game though and Burnley always seem to throw in a bad performance now and again. It was one of those days.

"We started the second half better, but Reading got the third goal which was important, but our performance was way below par. The crowd was leaving early and I don't blame them, I wish I could have joined them!"

The Clarets must pick themselves up before their next game which is against Coventry next weekend.
