Sidwell Set For New Deal

According to the Reading Evening Post, 21-year-old midfielder Steve Sidwell is on the verge of signing a new three-year deal with the Royals, tying him to the Madejski Stadium until the summer of 2007.

Reading's decision to reward their flame-haired midfielder with a new deal is surprising given that his current contract has two years left to run.

Traditionally the Royals leave it late to renew deals. But with Sidwell it seems John Madejski didn't want to risk losing his man on a free transfer.

In the past the likes of Darren Caskey, Jamie Cureton and most recently Jamie Ashdown have left the Madejski Stadium at the end of their contracts, having refused to sign new deals. By sorting Sidwell's contractual arrangements out early the club are more likely to hold onto one of their most valuable assets for a long period.

The highly-rated youngster scored nine times last season and put in some top notch displays, leading to speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

However, despite Alan Pardew's reported interest in taking the former Arsenal apprentice to West Ham, it appears that Sidwell will be heading nowhere this summer, and for many summers to come.

Sidwell, who will wear squad number four next season, is perhaps the only player that is guaranteed a first team place if fit. The Wandsworth born-midfielder was an ever-present last season, making forty-eight appearances.

Meanwhile, the club today unveiled their new strips for the 2004-05 season, manufactured by Puma. The home strip retains the traditional blue and white hoops, although the 'all the way round' hoops of last season have been ditched in favour of blue patches under the arms.

The new away strip is all white and will have white shorts and white socks. However, when facing the likes of Brighton, QPR, Stoke and Sheffield United it is likely that the club will have to wear the black away kit of last season as neither the white away shirt nor blue and white home shirt will be compatible with the opposition's attire.
