Royals Reluctant To Strengthen Squad

Royals boss Alan Pardew will not be adding to his squad before the start of the season. Reading face a gruelling first four games against ex-Premiership sides Derby, Leicester, Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday but Pards is determined to keep the faith in the squad that won him promotion to Division One.

Reading were initially reluctant to strengthen the squad because of the ITV Digital collapse. However, Chief Executive Nigel Howe revealed a chink of light at the end of the tunnel, claiming the Royals were ready to spend once a TV deal was sorted.

Now that Sky have agreed a TV deal with the Football League Reading, who have in the past been accused of not digging deep enough into their profits to strengthen the squad, will not add to the squad before the start of the season.

Traditionally teams that have failed to add to their squad after being promoted have struggled to stay alive in their pastures new and have been sent back down.

Pards told the Reading Chronicle: "I'm not going to bring anyone in before the start of the season.

"I've made my promise to the players that those who got us promoted last season will start this season. I'm sticking by that and it's up to them to show what they can do. If they perform well then I won't bring anyone else in, however if we struggle I'll maybe have to make a few changes."
