Alan Pardew has denied that he told reporters that Reading will not strengthen their squad before the start of the season but admitted that it is 'very unlikely' that any new signings will be made.

The Reading Chronicle yesterday quoted Alan Pardew on saying: "I've made my promise to the players that those who got us promoted last season will start this season. I'm sticking by that and it's up to them to show what they can do. If they perform well then I won't bring anyone else in, however if we struggle I'll maybe have to make a few changes."

But today the Royals boss told Reading MAD: "I actually said that it is very unlikely taht I will be bringing anyone in before the start of the season, and anyone that does come in will not play in the first few games.

"Definitely the team that starts the season will come from this squad, as I want to give the boys the chance to show their worth."

Reading have been linked to players such as Marcus Hahnemann, Steve Brown, Cristophe Kinet, Paul Evans and Danny Cullip over the summer.
