Jamie Ashdown will benefit from playing in the frist team at Bournemouth during his month on loan there according ot reserve team manager Brian McDermott.

The 21-year-old shotstopper played his first game in a Cherries jersey yesterday, before completing the necessary paperwork for his loan spell this morning.

It was a winning start for Jamie too, although he failed to keep a clean sheet, the reserves triumphed 3-2 at Cardiff.

At Reading there are limited first team opportunities for Ashdown, last season manager Alan Pardew was reluctant to throw him in at the deep end when Phil Whitehead was injured, opting instead to loan in more experienced players.

According to reserve coach Brian McDermott, spending a month at Bournemouth should help the young goalkeeper develop as a player.

McDermott told readingfc.co.uk: "Jamie is a young goalkeeper, some 'keepers don't reach their prime until their late twenties, he could be one of them.

"At the club we feel that he has a good future in the game - like we do with all our young players. But he needs to play some first team games - that is why we let him go to Bournemouth.

"It's difficult for a goalkeeper and only time will tell how he develops. Who know's where he'll be when he's twenty five? He could be in the Premiership or with a lower-league side. I just don't know."
