Match Winner Toasts Teammates

As Gerard Houllier's Anfield side fall to one bad result after another maybe he could consider recalling winger Richie Partridge from Coventry.

Houllier's side have been criticised for a lack of width. The wide play that Partridge provides could be the perfect tonic for Liverpool's coughing and spluttering title aspirations as they head into the new year.

The 22-year-old Irishman scored one and set one up on Boxing Day as the Sky Blues recorded their fourth victory on the trot, defeating Reading 2-0 at Highfield Road.

In light of his fantastic achievements the former Irish youth star was very modest when commenting on his performance.

"I don't seem to get many tap-ins but it is just great to get three points to extend the winning run and keep our third clean sheet, so we are all over the moon," he explained, speaking to icCoventry.co.uk.

Coventry opened the scoring just prior to half-time through Craig Hignett, thanks to an assist from Partridge.

"I remember getting the ball off Barry Quinn and cutting inside onto my right foot and Higgy made a great run to the near post and headed it in and got the team ahead."

Just minutes after the break the young protégé put the game out of Reading's reach with a superb solo effort. "For the second, I picked the ball up near the half-way line after the gaffer made a challenge and I beat a couple of players that came to me and the shot opened up for me and thankfully went in."

At the back the Midlands outfit restricted Reading to very few chances, indeed, the Royals best chance from open play fell to goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann who dashed forward for a late corner.

The clean sheet was Coventry's third on the bounce, instrumental Partridge claims to their success.

"The defence have done brilliantly and the only way they look like being beaten is from a very good individual effort or a screamer from outside the box because they are so good as a unit and individually at the moment," he added.

"To know that they are behind you just gives you the confidence to get forward and create chances.

"We have got a great blend of youth and old heads. Looking at the spine of the team, we have got Shawsy at the back, the gaffer in the middle and Dean Holdsworth up front and we are getting results from it."
