Prior to this afternoon's 3-0 humbling at the hands of the lowly Dons, the Royals confirmed that they had signed Dave Kitson from Third Division outfit Cambridge United.

The blonde haired centre-forward has signed a two-and-a-half year contract keeping him at the Madejski Stadium until 2006. He will wear the squad number twelve, the number that previously graced Jamie Cureton's back.

Twenty-three-year-old Kitson cost the Royals £150,000, but the club could be required to pay an extra £200,000 depending on their achievements. Having seen Reading thrashed by bottom of the league Wimbledon, Reading MAD are quite sure the U's won't be getting any further payment for Kitson.

Manager Steve Coppell, who has come under fire following disappointing recent performances, admitted that he was pleased to have signed such a talented youngster.

"Dave is a promising young player from the lower leagues who can give us a bit more variety up front. I hope he can fulfill his potential with this great opportunity," said the Royals boss.

He will certainly be hoping for goals from Kitson as his side have scored just four times in their last eight games, causing them to slide down the table faster than the Reading fanbase leave the ground when the opposition score their third.

However, Kitson is just pleased to have signed for such a big club. The big frontman, who has found the net eleven times for Cambridge this season, is relishing the prospect of starting life at the Madejski Stadium.

He told Reading World: "Hopefully I can come in, hold my own and prove my worth. I'm grateful for this chance and I can't wait to get out there."

However, it is apparent that Kitson either doesn't know anything about the Royals or he is over-keen on making a good impression as he added: "There are a lot of good players here."

Right... which football match were you watching this afternoon?

Anyway, now the Royals have two new attackers now they need just a goalkeeper four defenders and four midfielders before they can think about competing in matches.
