"Before the game I was thinking it was asking an awful lot for 10 fresh faces to gel together and put in a fluid performance and that proved to be the case."

David Hodgson - Not happy with the referee

"Unfortunately referees get fatigued, the same as players. Sometimes they get decisions right, sometimes they get them wrong and unfortunately he has got it wrong.

"Had that goal not been given then I think we would have won in normal time."

Then to make it worse Darlington saved the first spot kick but the referee ordered it to be taken again, Reading then scored.

"We had been down to 10 men for the best part of 50 minutes and the referee pulls us up on a trivial thing like that.

"That was heart-breaking for the players. I can deal with it but they are devastated."

On his team's missed penalties he said:

"You have to chuckle at the two penalties we missed. One hit the top of Row Z and the other went in the car park and smashed somebody's windscreen.

"So at least we can have a little bit of a laugh about it."
