Reading defender Andy Griffin says no player enjoys a trip to his former club Portsmouth but is excited by the prospect this weekend. The 31-year-old made 43 appearances for Pompey in a three-year spell before moving on to Derby and Stoke before arriving at the Madejski Stadium.

He told BBC Berkshire: "It's a place you don't like going to as the fans are very passionate about their club.

"There's no doubt it'll be a difficult game. Everyone expects a tough match."

Griffin, who signed a two-year deal at Reading this summer, believes Portsmouth's off-the-field problems will not affect his opponents this weekend.

"It's a shame for the fans but the footballers have to be professional," he added.

"I'm sure they will go onto the football field and play good football so no doubt they will be professional."

While Griffin expects Portsmouth to be tough opposition, he does feel Reading have the quality available to challenge the side relegated from the Premier League last season.

"We have a lot of character, determination and perseverance in this side. I don't know who the favourites are but it has the ingredients to be a very exciting game."
