Alan Pardew's appears to be getting desperate in his bid to bring a new defender to the club as he has chosen to bring Wolves reject Marc Edworthy to the club on trial.

The 30-year-old former Crystal Palace defender was released by Wolves at the end of last season following the club's promotion to the Premiership. Following the Molineux based side's decision not to offer Edworthy a new deal he went on trial with Stoke City, but he failed to impress Potter's boss Tony Pulis.

The ageing player, who has been used mainly as a right-back throughout his career is likely to be used a cover for Steve Brown and Adie Williams should he be successful in earning a contract at the Madejski Stadium.

Danny Cullip was strongly linked with a move to the Madejski Stadium earlier in the summer, as was former loanee Leo Roget. Ivar Ingimarsson, another Wolves player had also been linked with a move to Reading.

Edworthy, whose spell at Molineux was much-disrupted by injury, will make his Reading debut tonight in a reserve team friendly against local non-league side Didcot Town.

It is possible that the defender could also feature in Friday's friendly against Southampton at the Madejski Stadium.

Marc Edworthy is a pacy defender who lacks an eye for goal. He has netted just two times in more than three hundred professional matches!

Whilst there is no doubting that Edwothy is an experienced player with Premiership experience, he has a lot to prove to sceptical Reading supporters if he is to sign a deal at the Madejski as his career has gone somewhat quiet in the past couple of seasons.
