Royals boss Coppell, who has been handed a £1m plus war chest to equip his squad with the players to win promotion, has revealed that the Royals don't realistically stand a chance of signing Premiership reject Martin Keown.

With Reading's defensive problems mounting, Coppell is looking to bring in a new centre-back. Although out-of-contract veteran Keown would fit the billing, Reading manager Coppell reckons the 37-year-old will sign for a Premiership club.

"We're looking for an extra defender and Martin is available at the moment but realistically he will go to a Premiership club," explained Coppell, speaking to the official site.

Reading are desperate to sign a new centre-back as Steve Brown could be forced to retire through injury, whilst Welsh international Adie Williams struggled for form and fitness last season.

Coppell had hoped to sign Darren Powell from Crystal Palace to fill the defensive hole, but the ex-Brentford man snubbed Reading's approaches. Knowing that a move for Keown is unrealistic, the Royals boss could make a fresh approach for Luton's Emmerson Boyce.

However, the club will continue to monitor Keown's situation and will make the Championship winning centre-back an offer should he decide against signing for a Premiership club.

"If for whatever reason he chooses not to go to a Premiership club we will be one of the many interested parties at this level," remarked Coppell.

"But we've made no contact whatsover."
