Convey To Make Royals Debut Following MLS Backdown

Exciting left-winger Bobby Convey, who last week signed for the Royals in a phenomenal £800,000 deal, could make his Reading debut next Monday.

Convey could be set for a shock first appearance in a Royals shirt against Manchester City, the club's final pre-season friendly.

Reading play their only home game of the season against the Manchester giants, and Convey will be able to make his debut as the MLS have allowed the 21-year-old to leave DC United early so that he can link up with his new team mates.

The USA international was scheduled to play in the MLS All-Star match this weekend as he says his farewells to American soccer, but the league have given Convey permission to miss the match.

The wing man met up with his new team mates for the first time yesterday and should be able to get to know the squad sufficiently well enough before August 7th for Steve Coppell to hand him his debut on the season's opening day.

Royals chairman John Madejski was pleased to see Convey appear ahead of schedule, aiding his club's pre season preparations.

"We are delighted we have been able to negotiate Bobby's arrival a few days earlier than initially anticipated," said Madejski, speaking to the official site.

"It will help Bobby tremendously as we prepare for our first game of the season. We are very grateful to the MLS for their co-operation on this matter."

Convey, who will wear squad number 17, is currently suffering from a dead leg so is unlikely to play ninety minutes on Monday, especially with the new season so close.
