Liverpool welcome Reading to Anfield in the Carling Cup as they look to bounce back from last weekend's disappointing defeat to Manchester United.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez insists he will treat the competition seriously, but he is set to make wholesale changes to the side.

Jose Reina, John Arne Riise and Mohamed Sissoko are set to be the only survivors from the defeat at Old Trafford.

Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Jamie Carragher Sami Hyypia, Steve Finnan and Dirk Kuyt are all expected to be rested with the weekend game with Aston Villa in mind.

Craig Bellamy, Fabio Aurelio and Mark Gonzalez are all unavailable through injury, but it is hoped they could return at the weekend.

Robbie Fowler is back in the squad after a long lay-off with a back problem and he will lead the attack.

A number of youngsters including Gabriel Paletta, Danny Guthrie, Lee Peltier and Jamie Smith are all set to get the chance to impress.

Young goalkeeper David Martin is named in the squad and he will provide back-up to Reina with Jerzy Dudek suspended.

Reading boss Steve Coppell is set to blood a number of youngsters in the game at Anfield.

James Henry, Pierre Joseph-Dubois, Alex Pearce, Jonathan Hayes and Curtis Osano have all been included in the squad for the trip to Merseyside.

Dave Kitson, Graeme Murty, Bobby Convey and Peter Mate are all sidelined through injury.

Andre Bikey is available again after serving a suspension and Sam Sodje is expected to start having recovered from knee surgery.
