The Reading defender says there is no way that referee Brian Curson should have pointed to the spot.

The Royals were on course for an opening day win at Portman Road when deep into stoppage time Jim Magilton went down, apparently fouled by Steve Brown. Despite the blatant dive, the referee pointed to the spot. Video replays proved that Magilton fell to the floor all to easily.

Mr Curson's decisions throughout Saturday's game were questionable to say the least.

Feeling robbed, Steve Brown told readingfc.co.uk: "I can say that from the actual tackle there was no iota of contact whatsoever. You just have to hope that the officials get it right, this time they got it wrong."

Reading's would-have-been profitable afternoon at Portman Road first began to fall apart in the seventy-eighth minute when left-back Nicky Shorey was dismissed for denying Pablo Counago a clear goalscoring opportunity.

However, Counago's opportunity to put the ball in the net was far from clear, yet the referee dismissed Shorey for the offence regardless. Brown, who was very close to the incident, believes the Spaniard made the most of the tackle which was not worth a red card.

"I'd say any contact was minimal, Counago couldn't wait to make a meal of it and the referee has got to understand football a bit better," he added.

"It wasn't a desperate last-ditch challenge, it was fifty-fifty going for the ball. He (the referee) has deemed it a foul, fine, but it was not a sending off."

Brown and teammates will attempt to record their first win of the season on Wednesday night when they travel to Boston for their Carling Cup first round tie.
